Repurposing Video Content | Tips & Examples

Repurposing content, including video content, is an excellent way to take advantage of existing assets and reach new audiences. There are several ways to go about it.

However, just remember that repurposing video content is not simply a matter of reposting video content on social media with summaries. Instead, you should invest much effort and thought in creating a comprehensive strategy to incorporate recycled content into your distribution.

As I mentioned earlier, repurposing video content can take many forms. For this article, video content is refined to include YouTube and video podcast content. Video content can be repurposed:

  • From long-form video to short-form video

  • From video to blog articles

In this article, I discuss the best strategies to adopt to repurpose video content from podcasts and YouTube videos. I also provide examples to illustrate these strategies.

Repurposing long-form videos into blog articles

This is likely the most difficult form of repurposing. It involves taking video content and turning it into an article. This poses a number of challenges. The way we talk isn't always the same as we write.

Writing involves more care and thought. It is, or at least it should be, more efficient. There should be no filler words or diversions of the sort that are typical in video content.

There are several advantages to repurposing video content:

  • It allows you to take advantage of SEO

  • You can translate popular YouTube videos into popular blog articles

  • Cater to people who prefer written as opposed to video content

  • It reduces the effort required to write an article from scratch

There are two approaches you can take to repurpose video content into blog articles. The first approach involves planning for your video essays to be published simultaneously as articles and videos.

The second approach involves finding video content that has already been published and repurposing it into blog content. The first method is particularly good for video essays — that is, videos with a script that is properly structured in the form of an “essay” or article.

The second approach is more challenging and may include video content with fluff or rambling interviews with thought leaders or persons of interest. This type of video script cannot be published in its current form. It requires heavy editing before it can be published as a blog article.

Repurposing essay-type video content

Repurposing essay-type video content is an excellent way of streamlining your content distribution strategy. It means creating videos that can be easily transformed into articles.

This means you need to put lots of thought and energy into such content. You have to strike a proper balance between the tone that works for video content for a place like YouTube and the tone that works for a blog article.

A good example of a content creator who strikes that balance is Alyssa Matesic. She’s a professional book editor with a website and YouTube channel. Her blog content is typically almost the same as the script of her video.

Check out this YouTube video called “This Simple Trick Will Make Your Novel Unputdownable”:

Compare it to the article that is associated with the video. Here is the first paragraph of that article called “How to End a Chapter to Make Your Book Unputdownable”

Here's the best compliment a writer could ever receive: ”I couldn't put your book down!” But how do you actually achieve that unputdownable quality in your book?  As a book editor, I'm constantly asking myself this question. It involves some combination of plotting, character development, and pacing — but as I was editing a client's manuscript recently, I had an aha moment where I discovered a simple trick that will supercharge your story with this propulsive quality. I'm going to break down exactly how you can apply this writing trick and go through some examples so you can see it in action.

It is more or less a word-for-word transcription. This approach to creating content does come with some danger though. The video content may come across as unnatural or boring if it is too close to blog content.

YouTube videos are appealing exactly because they have a visual and spontaneous element that you don’t typically find in written content. This could be missed if you format your video script to resemble blog content too closely.

Repurposing more dynamic content

Repurposing video content that is more dynamic than a video essay has its own set of challenges. A podcast or YouTube video script that includes interviews or that is more rambling cannot simply be published on your blog.

It requires heavy editing so that it can come across as readable. There are two approaches you can take to these types of videos:

  1. Publish interviews as heavily edited scripts

  2. Publish interviews as true blog articles using the video as inspiration

Both methods would involve professional editing services. Turning this type of dynamic content into a blog article would require knowing what to omit, knowing what to highlight, and knowing what to change.

Remember, often the audience that will end up reading your blog will differ from the audience that consumes your video content. So you should focus on writing in the appropriate tone to satisfy the expectations of the target audience who lands on your blog.

Repurposing long-form videos into short videos

Repurposing long-form videos into shorter formats is one of the more straightforward repurposing strategies. It has many advantages:

  • It allows you to make the most of otherwise boring videos

  • Take advantage of users with short attention spans

  • It allows you to take advantage of the growing trend of “shorts.”

Short video clips have become one the most popular forms of content on YouTube. It has been reported that YouTube Shorts are viewed over 70 billion times every day. Repurposing long-form content into shorts allows you to take advantage of that.

Short video content that ranges between 30 seconds and a few minutes have been all the rage since the rise of TikTok. The other platforms are trying their best to catch up. Now most of them allow you to post this type of content including:

  • Tiktok, home of short clips

  • YouTube Shorts

  • LinkedIn

When repurposing short-form video content focus on clips that are “sensational” or interesting. This means focusing on soundbites that sound whole or complete and that can capture the attention of viewers.
